Kellie Hastings is an artist currently living and working off of the Gulf Coast in Alabama. She holds two degrees in glass, a BFA from the University of South Alabama in Mobile, AL, and an MFA from Kent State University in Kent, OH. She has also had opportunities to learn and expand on glass and creative processes and techniques at the Penland School of Crafts, Pittsburgh Glass Center, and through an internship at STARWorks NC’s Glass Studio.
I like to imagine what colors are doing when we aren’t looking, how they might be disassembling and reassembling themselves as we go about our day.
Color as well as many other stimuli; shadows, patterns, sounds, and sensations, act as a catalyst for much of my work. I am interested in exploring how sets of stimuli can visually build up and be experienced, and how that relates to what we experience in our daily lives.
My work pairs seemingly disparate qualities, organic elements and geometric forms, together in a way that attempts to make them feel unified and organized through careful layering and intertwining. Articulate geometric forms act as a field for organizing the hundreds of elements that coat the sculptural forms. The transparency of the glass colors and lines allow for each layer to be simultaneously visible and tucked away. The finished pieces evoke a sense of order among the chaos of these contrasting elements.
